Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity on 25 May 1963. It is celebrated in various countries on the African continent, as well as around the world.

The organisation was transformed into the African Union on 9 July 2002 in Durban, South Africa, but the holiday continues to be celebrated on 25 May.

May 25, Africa Day, is aimed at celebrating and acknowledging the successes of the OAU since its inception. It symbolises Africa’s unity, commitment to peace, democracy, and economic development.

HISTORY

The Organisation of African Unity was an intergovernmental organization established on 25 May 1963 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, by 32 African states with the main aim of bringing the African nations together and resolving the issues within the continent. One of the main heads for OAU’s establishment was Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana.

It was disbanded on 9 July 2002 by its last chairman, South African President Thabo Mbeki, and replaced by the African Union (AU). Some of the key aims of the OAU were to encourage political and economic integration among member states, and to eradicate colonialism and neo-colonialism from the African continent.

2023 THEME: ‘Promoting and appreciating knowledge in and from Africa‘.

The theme for 2023 is about highlighting the preservation of coastal communities and environments that were at risk around the vast plateau.
