Mrs. Barbara Magaji, Programmes Manager of Amnesty International, made the appeal during a stakeholders’ dialogue held on Thursday in Abuja. The event, organized by Amnesty International in collaboration with the French Embassy in Nigeria, commemorated the World Day Against the Death Penalty.

Magaji emphasized the urgent need to remove all provisions in national and state laws that permit capital punishment. She also urged the government to ensure the criminal justice system is adequately resourced to effectively investigate crimes, support victims, and guarantee fair trials without resorting to the death penalty.

According to Magaji, the Federal Government should, through the National Assembly, consider the abolition of the death penalty for all crimes during the ongoing Nigerian Constitutional Amendment process.
