Bishop Kukah: ‘ It will take time to have qualitative leadership in Nigeria’, describes Sharibu a metaphor

By Ado Hassan, Sokoto

Catholic Bishop of the Sokoto Diocese, ‎Matthew Hassan Kukah on Sunday night said it will take Nigeria  long to produce  qualitative leadership.

He said” it can be achievable if an average Nigerian is out of the ‘web’ of illiteracy and self social unconsciousness.”

Kukah made the remark in Sokoto while interacting with select journalists as part of  end of year annual event by the Diocese.

He noted that most Nigerians were physical victims of political manipulation of the elites.

” We lack the sense of placing value on our selves. We are consistently influenced to believe in voting politicians”, he wondered.

He pointed FG’s inability and lack of instrument of proper monitoring of implementation and compliance to constitutional provisions by ‎politicians on their fundamental objectives and responsibilities to their constituents (electorates).

” It is unfortunate that our government focuses so much on infrastructure‎ instead of promoting the general welfare of the people. That is why the essence of creating local government has yet been realistic.

” Some after getting mandate, forget their people which culminates to lack of political will to provide for those they govern or represent”, he observed.

The Cleric added” We have resisted even the colonialists with our bare hands. Why can’t we resist oppression of politicians conceptually to actualise our desires and aspirations”, he asked.

According to the Southern Kaduna born Bishop ” We should find a way of protesting the poor condition of living”, he called.

On his Otta farm controversial visit to reconcile former President Obasanjo and his Vice, Atiku Abubakar who flies the PDP presidential candidature flag for the 2019 polls, the Catholic Bishop  ‎said he had no regrets, explaining that the scenario that played out in Abeokuta was never his script just as added that” every catholic priest is tutored to be a mediator and reconciliator which is the true and biblical meaning of the gospel.

” I understand the political sentiment and reaction because it involved Obasanjo and Atiku and due to the political environment. Even though, the photograph was my idea. It didn’t happen by accident. But I must ‎say that the reconciliation is something that I am happy that it happened. I can’t stop those with political investment to react  over the  matter.

” I am still on more reconciliation projects. This is my conviction as a priest.

” I know is what crea
ted that diversion and political sentiment. I for one, have been talking to Obasanjo on many occasions to reconcile with Atiku even at a lecture at Four Square Church in Lagos‎ where the former President was Chairman of the occasion.”

According to Kukah” politics remain my least of concern but had to ask him(Obasanjo) what about his issue with his Vice?.

” He only expressed gratitude to  me by saying, ” ‎I am greatful to you for reconciling me with my late wife(Stella) before her demise. He now gave me a date in November for the reconciliation with Atiku.

” He asked me to get in touch with Atiku but told him that it’s been long I reached out to him.

‎” He said he told Secondus and Sheikh Gumi whom I ever met but I know him.

” He sat with Atiku to discuss in a closed door meeting and they eventually came out to say they have reconciled and I said thank God, that’s what we want”, he said.

‎Similarly, on the lingering issue bordering on the release of Leah Sharibu, Kukah almost lacked immediate comment, summoned hearts to say” her abduction is beyond the reason of religion”, adding that “there is more to that.‎”

The Bishop continued:” I feel saddened with the way the children and their faith are being played like football. We should ask ourselves what in Islam in northern Nigeria that  caused her abduction”, he rhetorically spoke.

‎Kukah who kept questioning, described as frustrating the issue of Leah Sharibu, adding that “she is a metaphor”.

” The tragedy is that Europe are more concerned and interested in the matter than Nigeria. I can only pray. I have contacted her parents but I cannot see anything much suggesting collective sense of moral moral revulsion.

” Today, we are living in a country where you can be denied promotion, job and other rights and privileges because of religious differences”, he pointed out.

While commenting on  young ‎Nigerians aspiring for elective positions, Kukah said they have the requirement to advance the society but must be ready to work with a genuine mentor.

” Leadership begins with service, sacrifice and support to people around you.

” Nothing comes easy. You can become a leader without going through certain processes and practice. Obama started by providing free services to people‎ to be popular and eventually became president”, he stated.

According to the Cleric” Nothing wrong for young ones to seek elective positions. But most changes happen in our immediate environment.

” ‎Politics is tie to freedom of access to basic rights and privileges among others by creating conditions that will provide opportunities for self actualisation”, he pointed out.

End.
