EU Calls for Reforms before 2027 Elections

The European Union Election Observation Mission has urged Nigeria to implement urgent judicial and constitutional reforms before the 2027 general elections.

Speaking in Abuja, EU Parliament member Barry Andrews commended INEC for improvements since 2023 but stressed that major reforms — including electronic transmission of results and INEC’s financial autonomy — require legislative action.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, warned that uncertainty over the legal framework could destabilize preparations for the polls. He called on the National Assembly to act quickly, noting that many EU recommendations are still pending since the 2023 elections.

Civil society groups are also demanding deeper reforms to strengthen INEC’s independence, curb political interference, and ensure faster resolution of election disputes.
