The House of Representatives Committee on Culture and Creative Economy has intensified its oversight functions with a series of strategic meetings held today with key institutions in the sector.
As part of its ongoing engagement to strengthen Nigeria’s cultural and creative industries, the Committee met with the Director General of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) and the Director General of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC).
The high-level sessions focused on the review of the 2024 budget implementation for both agencies, with particular attention to project execution, performance indicators, and impact within their respective mandates. Lawmakers also discussed practical strategies for enhancing revenue generation, improving policy frameworks, and deepening the reach and relevance of cultural initiatives across the country.
Speaking after the sessions, the Committee reiterated its commitment to supporting the work of both institutions, acknowledging their vital roles in preserving Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, promoting national cohesion, and fostering innovation through the creative economy.
“We are determined to ensure that the institutions under our purview are equipped with the tools, funding, and policies they need to thrive,” a statement from the Committee read. “The cultural and creative industries are not just expressions of our identity — they are powerful engines for economic growth and national unity.”
The Committee pledged to continue advocating for increased budgetary allocations, targeted capacity building, and the formulation of robust policies that can position Nigeria as a continental leader in the global creative space.
The meetings are part of a broader legislative drive to ensure transparency, accountability, and enhanced performance across the cultural and creative economy landscape.
