House of Reps Rejects Religious Motivation for Nigeria’s Security Challenges, Counters US Bill

Nigeria’s House of Representatives has emphatically rejected narratives portraying the nation’s security challenges as either religiously motivated or state-sponsored. This stance comes as a direct response to a bill introduced in the United States Congress on March 11, 2025.

The US resolution seeks to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” for allegedly engaging in, and tolerating, systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom.

In a swift reaction, the House of Representatives mandated relevant government agencies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to compile and transmit empirical evidence aimed at discrediting the claims put forth in the US bill.

The resolution, which followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, received unanimous support from members of the House.

Lawmakers asserted that Nigeria is not grappling with a religious crisis and underscored the critical need for prompt diplomatic action to prevent the bill from gaining traction in the U.S. Congress.

This development echoes a recent dismissal by the Federal Government two weeks prior, which described allegations of terrorists carrying out a systematic genocide against Christians in Nigeria as “false, baseless, despicable, and divisive.”

In a statement, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, maintained that depicting Nigeria’s security challenges as a targeted campaign against a single religious group constitutes a gross misrepresentation of reality.
