Sokoto councillor, Jamila volunteers teaching services to school, urges girl child enrolment

Concerned over low enrolment of the girl child in School, Hon. Jamila Bunu, a female councillor in Yabo local of Sokoto state has engaged in providing teaching services on volunteer agreement at the UBE Girls Model Secondary School, Yabo.

Similarly she identified poverty and lack of parental interest among other fundamental factors responsible for low enrolment of the girl child.

Bunu who is one of the few females building their political career in Sokoto state spoke Tuesday on the sidelines during an assessment tour of projects and activities of the governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal led administration by journalists in the state.

She disclosed that , ” I decided to volunteer my self to teach in the school in order to encourage parents to embrace the culture of sending their girl child to acquire education.

” No one influenced my decision to teach. Is about sacrifice and giving back to the community for the transformation of girl child.”

The Councillor further explained that she takes the students in art subjects and they have been doing well in the last 2 years of engaging herself in teaching.

She said no fewer than 200 students were receiving lectures under her volunteer engagement adding ” out of the total , 80% have always made it.”

However, Bunu appealed to the well to do , private organisations and individuals to assist government is driving the campaign and extend support and assistance to lees privilege parents towards achieving high enrolment in school of the girl child.

Besides, from the school’s statistical record on notice board, the enrolment figure showed a total of 626 students out of which only 480 successfully passed to JSS out of which only 146 scaled through to SS class.

However, the school had just commenced its SS session this year even as it has well equipped facility with functional laboratory, clinic , library and other adjourning requirements provided by the Tambuwal administration to making teaching and learning conducive.

Hitherto, the local government has invested resources with the active support of the state government in the renovation and expansion of its general hospital as well the construction of staff quarters, solar lightening among other projects according to its Chairman, Halliru Abubakar Kilgori.

In the same vein, Shagari local government has facilitated the commencement of the construction of the late Shehu Shagari Memorial Primary School in Sabon Gari community with a block of 3 classrooms and administrative office, the council Chairman, Aliyu Dantani Shagari disclosed to reporters.

He said the work being undertaken by SUBEB, had nearly reached 70% completion stage.

” It will benefit the people of the community and other surrounding villages”,he said.

He however, said the council with the dominant support of the state government embarked on parameter fencing of GGSSC, Shagari to ensure security.
