US House Subcommittee to Review Nigeria’s CPC Redesignation

The United States House of Representatives Subcommittee on Africa is scheduled to hold an open hearing on Thursday, November 20, 2025, to formally examine President Donald Trump’s recent redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) regarding religious freedom.

The hearing is set to take place at 11:00 am in Room 2172 of the Rayburn House Office Building and will be made available via a live webcast. It will be chaired by Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ).

The CPC designation, if ratified by the Senate, carries significant consequences for the Nigerian government. It would authorize the U.S. to impose sanctions on Nigerian officials found to be complicit in religious persecution. Additionally, the status could limit certain forms of bilateral assistance between the two nations.

Crucially, the redesignation signals to the international community that the U.S. government views religious freedom in Nigeria as remaining under a serious threat.

The subcommittee review is a critical step in determining the long-term impact of the Trump administration’s decision on U.S.-Nigeria relations.
