The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to shut down academic activities across public universities nationwide if federal and state governments fail to resolve long-standing union demands.

The threat was issued in an official statement on Friday by ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, following an emergency meeting of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) held at the University of Abuja.
Piwuna warned that the union reserves the right to reactivate its industrial action “without further notice” due to government failure to fully execute the collective bargaining agreement finalized in December 2025.
Core issues highlighted by the union include the non-implementation of the 2025 pact—which concluded over eight years of negotiations—the non-release of the remaining 3.5 months of withheld salaries, and the failure to remit third-party deductions withheld from lecturers’ wages.
ASUU expressed frustration over the delay, stating that both federal and state authorities have shown insufficient commitment to fulfilling terms reached during previous negotiations.
