The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government to urgently approve emergency palliative measures—including wage awards for workers nationwide—to cushion the economic impact of escalating petroleum prices.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by NLC President Joe Ajaero, the organized labor movement also demanded that crude oil be allocated to domestic refineries in Naira to stabilize local fuel prices and bolster national energy security.
The union further called on the government to expand national strategic petroleum storage capacity to effectively manage future energy crises and supply disruptions.
Ajaero warned that the persistent rise in petrol costs would worsen the severe economic hardship confronting Nigerians, pointing out that transportation hikes inevitably trigger inflation across food, rent, school fees, and essential commodities. Rebutting official policy stances on price deregulation, the NLC maintained that state intervention and fuel subsidies remain legitimate social safety nets during national emergencies.
