Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has returned to the Super Eagles squad in Uyo, emerging as a primary attacking option following Victor Osimhen’s injury-induced absence ahead of Friday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Madagascar.

Awoniyi, who was recalled to replace Osimhen in head coach Éric Chelle’s setup, is among the players currently at the team’s base as preparations intensify for the Group L opener at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
The forward faces competition from Akor Adams, Tolu Arokodare, and George Ilenikhena for a starting role in Chelle’s forward line.
The squad’s numerical strength expanded further on Tuesday following the arrivals of team captain Wilfred Ndidi and winger Samuel Chukwueze. The duo landed at the Victor Attah International Airport at 5:20 p.m. aboard an Ibom Air flight from Lagos, bringing the total number of players in camp to 23.
Earlier in the day, goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali linked up with the group, joining the rest of the squad for the Super Eagles’ first official training session in Uyo.
Coach Chelle is now evaluating his tactical options to restructure Nigeria’s frontline in Osimhen’s absence as the team finalizes preparations for Friday’s encounter.
