Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has officially inaugurated a nine-member Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances leading to the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The inauguration took place at the Government House in Minna following a swearing-in ceremony conducted by Justice Muhammad Muhammad of the Niger State High Court, who also serves as Chairman of the panel.
Charged with uncovering the events surrounding the fatalities, the panel has been given a four-week mandate to conduct its investigations, determine accountability, and submit a comprehensive report with actionable recommendations to the state government.
Addressing members during the inauguration, Governor Bago urged the panel to uphold integrity and thoroughly fulfill its mandate in the interest of justice, public transparency, and the people of Niger State.
