The announcement came ahead of FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s appearance at the America Business Forum in Miami, where U.S. President Donald Trump and Argentine World Cup champion Lionel Messi were also featured speakers.
While FIFA did not disclose who will receive the inaugural award, speculation immediately arose that the honor could go to Trump, a close ally of Infantino and a strong supporter of the upcoming World Cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Trump, accompanied by Infantino, had announced in August from the Oval Office that the World Cup draw would be held at the Kennedy Center.
The U.S. leader, who recently became chairman of the historic arts venue, described his new role as part of a broader campaign against what he called “woke culture.”
The FIFA Peace Prize is expected to recognize individuals or organizations that promote global unity, tolerance, and cooperation through football — values the federation says are central to the sport’s global mission.
