NUJ Condemns Niger Government’s Threat to Shut Down Badeggi FM

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has criticised the Niger State Government for its threats to shut down a private radio station, Badeggi FM 90.1, and demolish its premises in Minna.

statement signed by the NUJ National President, Alhassan Abdullahi, the union described the government’s alleged action as “a blatant act of intimidation and an assault on press freedom.”

 

Abdullahi reminded the state government that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is the sole legal authority empowered to regulate, license, or sanction broadcast stations in Nigeria. He emphasized that the freedom of the press, as enshrined in the Constitution, is crucial for the survival of democratic governance.

The NUJ President also called on civil society groups, professional associations, and the general public to resist any form of executive highhandedness that undermines press freedom.
