The State Department characterized the move as an effort to end “abuse” of the U.S. immigration system by foreign nationals who might become a “public charge” and rely on taxpayer-funded welfare and benefits.
The suspension focuses on those seeking permanent residency, while short-term tourist, business, and student visas—including travel for the 2026 World Cup—remain unaffected. Affected nations reportedly include Nigeria, Brazil, Pakistan, Egypt, and Russia, alongside countries already facing restrictions like Iran, Somalia, and Afghanistan.
The freeze will remain in place while the administration reassesses vetting procedures to ensure new immigrants do not “extract wealth” from the American public.
