Former president of the institution Olushola Sanni cautioned that many buildings across the country lack the necessary engineering oversight or design features required to withstand seismic forces.

Although Nigeria is categorized as a low seismic-risk zone Sanni noted that the country is not immune to earth tremors and that vibrations from distant epicenters can still cause structural damage and public panic.

He urged against complacency emphasizing that the current absence of major earthquakes does not mitigate the risk to residents living in structures not built for seismic activity.
