The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) have launched joint investigations into the alleged mismanagement of presidential intervention funds meant for national football teams.
The probe focuses on the funds approved by President Bola Tinubu in 2024, which were designated to clear long-standing wage arrears, match allowances, and bonuses owed to players and technical staff of Nigeria’s national teams.
A senior source familiar with the investigation confirmed on Thursday that several officials linked to the management and disbursement of the funds have already been summoned for questioning and have submitted official statements to investigators.
However, details regarding the identities of the questioned officials remain undisclosed, and anti-graft agencies have yet to confirm whether formal arrests have been made.
The anti-corruption probe coincides with major leadership turmoil at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), following the sudden resignation of its President, Ibrahim Gusau, after serving three years and 11 months in office.
Gusau announced his departure during a press conference in Abuja, stating that his decision to step down was reached after extensive consultations with his family and close associates.
