The Federal Government has approved plans to construct a new Eastern-Western electricity transmission grid as part of strategic measures to eliminate recurring collapses of the national power network.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, announced the development during the Harvard Business School Association of Nigeria (HBSAN) energy conference in Lagos, outlining the administration’s roadmap to strengthen transmission infrastructure.
Tegbe stated that procurement processes for the expansion projects are underway, with the physical benefits expected to materialize within two to three years.
To ensure targeted interventions, the Ministry of Power has initiated a nationwide technical audit across transmission installations.
The minister explained that the audit aims to identify specific structural faults, distinguishing between damaged towers, conductors, relays, and transformers, thereby preventing misallocation of capital resources toward functioning equipment.
The government noted that clustering electricity distribution into high-demand corridors alongside grid expansion will significantly stabilize supply nationwide.
