Nigeria has officially assumed the chairmanship of the United Nations General Assembly’s Fifth Committee, the key administrative body responsible for the organization’s financial management, budgetary oversight, and administrative affairs.
Speaking as Nigeria took up leadership of the committee, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, pledged to leverage the position to drive transparency, strict fiscal accountability, and structural administrative reforms within the international body.
Ibrahim emphasized that Nigeria’s tenure at the helm would not follow a “business as usual” approach, stressing the imperative for responsible resource management that yields tangible benefits for all 193 UN Member States.
In its role as chair of the Fifth Committee, Nigeria will oversee high-level deliberations on the United Nations’ annual operational budgets, financial governance, human resources management, operational efficiency, and the allocation of resources necessary to execute global mandates approved by Member States.
