The National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, has strongly criticized the leadership of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for rejecting the Federal Government’s newly approved ₦70,000 monthly transport intervention for public service workers.

Ajaero made the remarks during a television interview on Thursday, October 29, 2026, responding to statements by TUC leadership disavowing the deal reached between the government and organised labour.

Ajaero alleged that the TUC deliberately pulled out of the tripartite negotiations that yielded the temporary ₦70,000 relief allowance and therefore lacks the legal and moral standing to oppose a benefit secured for workers by its sister union.

Ajaero stated that he would have preferred a situation where TUC was negotiating for a higher intervention than what the NLC requested, allowing the government to harmonize both demands.

The NLC president also dismissed claims attributed to TUC leadership suggesting that negotiations for a new national minimum wage framework would not be due until August 2027.

Ajaero rejected the timeline as legally inaccurate, maintaining that the current minimum wage review cycle requires immediate action under statutory provisions.

He urged the TUC to focus on advocating for additional relief measures for Nigerian workers facing heightened living costs rather than undermining agreements designed to provide immediate economic cushioning.
