The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen as the interim head coach of the Super Falcons ahead of their 2028 Olympic Games qualifying fixtures against Comoros in October.

The NFF announced the temporary appointment in an official statement on Tuesday, clarifying that Eguavoen will oversee the technical bench while the search for a permanent head coach for the women’s senior national team remains ongoing.
The appointment comes in the wake of the dismissal of former head coach Justin Madugu and his entire technical crew on August 17.
The decision followed the Super Falcons’ disappointing run at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and their subsequent failure to secure a spot at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Entering WAFCON as defending champions, the Nigerian team suffered a 1–0 quarter-final loss to Cameroon before succumbing to a 2–1 defeat against South Africa in the World Cup qualifying play-off.
The play-off defeat brought an end to Nigeria’s historical record of qualifying for every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup since the tournament’s inception in 1991.
With crucial Olympic qualifiers approaching next month, the NFF has entrusted Eguavoen to stabilize the team during the transition period.
