This ruling followed a request from the prosecution to keep the suspects in custody for 14 days. During the court session, family members and fellow protesters were seen crying as the arrested individuals were led away into a waiting vehicle.
The protest occurred last weekend in the Esan West Local Government Area, where angry residents took to the streets to demonstrate against the frequent kidnappings and killings in the town.
Videos of the protest showed a large crowd of residents expressing their frustration, with some scenes showing people in a local market fleeing as the demonstrators approached.
While the protesters maintained they were marching for their safety and better security, the police intervened, claiming that the peaceful demonstration had been taken over by individuals intending to cause trouble.
The court’s decision to remand the youths is part of the ongoing legal proceedings following the police intervention to restore order in the region.
