Federal High Court Axes Five Political Parties Over Poor Election Performance

Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to deregister the African Democratic Congress and four other political parties for failing to meet national electoral standards.

The legal mandate, which follows the dismissal of several preliminary objections, strips the affected groups of their official registration after they failed to secure the legally required 25 percent of votes in the previous general elections.

Alongside the ADC, the affected political entities include Accord, Action Alliance, Action Peoples Party, and the Zenith Labour Party.

By virtue of this judicial ruling, the electoral umpire is prohibited from clearing any of these five parties to participate in subsequent political races, effectively barring them from the upcoming 2027 general elections.
