The member representing Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency, Hon. Amb. Daniel Asama,

has subjected the creation of new states in Nigeria to public scrutiny, urging citizens to either accept or reject the idea.
Hon. Asama, in his statement, emphasized his commitment to ensuring that his constituents are well-informed about the processes that shape the nation.
“As the representative of the people of Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency, I am committed to keeping you informed about the procedures that govern our country. Today, I would like to provide a synopsis of the process for creating new states in Nigeria, as outlined in Section 8 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he stated.
According to him, the creation of new states is a critical and complex process that involves multiple stakeholders and requires careful consideration.
He explained that a request for the creation of a new state must be supported by at least a two-thirds majority of members representing the affected area in the Senate, House of Representatives, State House of Assembly, and local government councils before it can be considered by the National Assembly.
Additionally, the proposal must be approved in a referendum by at least two-thirds of the people residing in the area requesting state creation. The results of the referendum must then be endorsed by a simple majority of all states in the federation, followed by a simple majority of members of the State Houses of Assembly.
For final approval, the proposal must be passed by a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the National Assembly.
Hon. Asama expressed confidence that providing this information would help Nigerians better understand the process of state creation.
“If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me,” he added.
