Kaduna’s Monthly Climate Hangout Builds Momentum for Environmental Awareness and Climate Journalism

By Ehis Agbon, Kaduna.

Kaduna, Nigeria – In a bid to raise environmental awareness and promote sustainable practices, the Monthly Climate Hangout in Kaduna continues to draw increasing attention among journalists, scientists, civil society groups, and environmental advocates.

Spearheaded by African Climate Reporters in collaboration with the Climate Change and Environment Desk of the Interfaith Mediation Center, the initiative serves as a unique platform for learning, engagement, and dialogue on critical climate-related issues.

Held at the Interfaith Mediation Center in Kaduna, the event brings together a vibrant mix of participants—from media professionals and researchers to community organizers and concerned citizens. The goal is clear: to deepen public understanding of environmental challenges, encourage protection of biodiversity, and spur collective climate action.

A notable feature of the hangout is its focus on empowering journalists to embrace climate reporting as a core beat. By equipping reporters with accurate information and connections to environmental experts, the initiative aims to amplify underreported stories about climate change and its impact on local communities.

One of the key contributors to the success of the program has been Dr. Comrade Yusuf Idris Amoke, the Special Adviser to the Kaduna State Governor on Climate Change. Dr. Amoke has been a constant presence at the hangouts, offering expert presentations and rallying support for climate education across the state.

“We are proud of the progress so far,” said Samson Auta, one of the organizers. “This is not just a gathering; it’s a movement to prepare a new generation of climate-conscious communicators and advocates.”

Hayatu Ashafa, another prominent participant, highlighted the collaborative nature of the event: “We are building partnerships between science, media, government, and grassroots communities. That’s the only way we can effectively tackle the climate crisis.”

With the next session scheduled for next week at the same venue, expectations remain high as Kaduna continues to carve out a model for inclusive and participatory climate dialogue in Nigeria.

The Monthly Climate Hangout is fast becoming a cornerstone for Kaduna’s climate movement, inspiring commitment and conversation around the environment—one meeting at a time.
