The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has refuted a viral online publication claiming that President Bola Tinubu approved life imprisonment for beneficiaries who fail to repay their student loans after graduation.

The agency officially labeled the report as “fake news” in a statement shared on its official X handle on Sunday, accompanied by a screenshot of a doctored newspaper front page circulating across social media platforms.
The fabricated image, erroneously dated Thursday, May 27, 2027, featured a headline alleging that the President declared that All students who fail to repay their loan after graduation will go to jail for life.
To counter the misinformation, NELFUND applied a prominent red “FAKE” stamp across the graphic, confirming that no such policy or directive was issued by the Federal Government or the fund’s management.
The agency noted that this public disclaimer is part of an ongoing effort to combat fraudulent circulars and false reports surrounding the Student Loan Scheme, following previous debunked claims regarding the alleged suspension of loan disbursements.
