Prime Minister Kamil Idris announced the return on Sunday, calling his administration the government of hope.

He told reporters that being back in the capital is a major step toward fixing the city and helping the people who live there.

The government was forced to leave Khartoum in 2023 when a civil war broke out between the national army and a paramilitary group called the Rapid Support Forces. During the height of the fighting, about five million people had to flee their homes in the city.

The military eventually won back control of the capital in March of last year, which allowed officials to begin planning their return.

Prime Minister Idris promised that the government’s top priority will be improving basic needs like electricity, clean water, healthcare, and schools.

He also declared that 2026 will be a year of peace for Sudan. While much of the city is still damaged from the years of fighting, the government hopes that its return will encourage more people to come back and start rebuilding their lives.
