Super Eagles Captain William Troost-Ekong Retires from International Football

Nigeria’s captain, William Troost-Ekong, has announced his retirement from international football, just days after he was included in the Super Eagles’ provisional squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which is billed to start on December 21.

Ekong, who has been a key figure for the Super Eagles since 2015, announced his decision to step away from international play in a post shared on his X handle on Thursday evening.

Born in the Netherlands to a Dutch mother and a Nigerian father, Troost-Ekong stated that representing the three-time African champions was a profound honour.

His retirement came approximately two days after his name was featured on Nigeria’s 54-man provisional list for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
