The tense final match ended 1-1 after extra time before DR Congo triumphed 4-3 in the penalty shootout, shattering Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and sealing DR Congo’s place in the inter-confederation play-offs.

Nigeria had taken an early lead in the third minute through Frank Onyeka’s deflected strike. However, Meschak Elia leveled the scores for DR Congo, sending the high-stakes encounter into extra time and, eventually, penalties.

Following the loss, Coach Chelle levied the surprising accusation of “voodoo” against the victorious Congolese team, suggesting supernatural influence contributed to his team’s defeat.

With the victory, DR Congo advances to the six-team inter-confederation play-offs, scheduled to be held in North America in March 2026.
