Zuma-Sambudla is being prosecuted over comments she made on social media four years ago, during the deadly civil unrest that followed the arrest of her father.

She faces charges of incitement to commit terrorism and public violence. The prosecution accuses her of fuelling the unrest that swept across several parts of the country in July 2021.

That week of anarchy, which included widespread looting and arson, resulted in the deaths of at least 300 people and caused economic damage estimated at $2.8 billion (£2.2 billion).

Zuma-Sambudla has consistently denied the charges, with her legal team previously labeling the state’s case as weak.

The defendant has repeatedly claimed that the charges against her constitute an attempt to settle political scores with her father. This comes after the former President started his own political party and began actively campaigning against the ruling African National Congress (ANC).
