The United States Department of State has granted permission for non-emergency government employees and their families to depart from the US Embassy in Abuja due to a declining security environment in Nigeria.

An updated travel advisory released on Wednesday recommends that Americans reconsider visiting the country citing concerns over terrorism kidnapping civil unrest and general crime.
While the national status is set at Level 3 several regions have been designated as Level 4 zones where travel is strictly discouraged.
The list of highest-risk areas has been expanded to include Plateau Jigawa Kwara Niger and Taraba states bringing the total number of states under the Do Not Travel category to 23.
