Concerned over the prolong ASUU industrial action , the Sokoto state Students’ Leaders Forum has said there is no justification for the prolong strike which has negatively impacted on security, economic, educational and other sectors.
Similarly , the Forum urged the Sokoto state University chapter of the union to in the best interest of the state and students, call off its sympathy strike, stressing that ” sympathy strike should not be indefinite.”
It pointed out that from the records available to the Forum” the legal action entered between the Federal government and ASUU, states universities are not joined in the suit which clearly indicates that they have no business with ASUU strike.”
Addressing a press conference Thursday in Sokoto , National President of Forum, Comrade Alkasim Isa Garba who noted that the industrial action was in good faith to drive the implementation of the 2009 agreement with the FG, but should not be dragged to suffer the educational pursuits of students who have been home for over six months.
According to Garba , the strike has aggravated the issues of insecurity, economic hardship , destruction of education facilities with attendant redundancy as well the scourge of drug and substances abuse among students.
” The long stay can force the idle students to be used as willing tool for destruction and other criminal activities”, he pointed out.
In the same vein, Comrade Garba said ” we acknowledge the sacrifices of the union and it’s commitment to saving the nation’s education sector from total collapse .”
He however, urged the Sokoto state University chapter of the umbrella body to see reasons and return to the classroom as the state government has no labour dispute with ASUU and the national strike action.
