CAN Demands Apology Over ‘Offensive’ Movie Title

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has formally condemned the title of the newly released Nollywood film, A Very Dirty Christmas, describing it as a “crude and sensational” insult to the Christian faith.

In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association argued that linking the word “dirty” to a sacred season representing purity and redemption trivializes the spiritual significance of the birth of Jesus Christ. CAN has called on the film’s producer, Ini Edo, to issue a public apology and reconsider the title to reflect the dignity of the religious holiday

The religious body also directed questions toward the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), demanding an explanation for how the title passed regulatory scrutiny. While the NFVCB initially defended the approval as a matter of creative expression within a fictional context, the board has since confirmed it is engaging with the producers to explore a title modification.

Despite the controversy, the film—which follows a tense family reunion—remains in cinemas following its national premiere earlier this week.
