Jonathan had been effectively stranded in coup-hit Guinea-Bissau for two days after military officers seized power in the West African country.
He was there leading the West African Elders Forum Observation Mission for the presidential and parliamentary elections when the military struck.
The ex-President and his team were flown out aboard a Guinea-Bissau government aircraft and were received on the tarmac by officials and supporters, confirming his safety following earlier concerns.
