Sokoto state government says it has earmarked N1.1 billion for the procurement of motorized boats and life jackets for distribution to 22 LGs affected by floods.
The disclosure which followed approval of the state Executive Council was made on Wednesday at the end of it meeting by the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs,Alhaji Ibrahim Adare.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto presided over the meeting held at the Government House Chambers, Sokoto.
Adare said the purchase of the boats and life jackets was sequel to report submitted by a committee set up on flooding in the state.
“You may recall that a committee was set up to look at the issue of flooding in the state which it mentioned in it report that, our of the 23 local government areas in the state, only Dange-Shuni local government that was not affected.
” In view of that , the state government deemed it necessary to procure motorized boats and life jackets and distribute them to the 22 local government areas that experienced flood this year,” he said
Accordingly, Adare said the sum of N565.2 million for the procurement of 12,376 bags of 25kg bags of rice for distribution to the poor and vulnerable in the state had also been approved by the state government.
He also disclosed an approval of N149.8 million by the state government for the completion of terminal block at the popular Alu garage in the state.
