Nine Dead in Brutal Tavern Raid and Robbery Near Johannesburg

South African police have launched a massive manhunt after a group of approximately 12 gunmen stormed the KwaNoxolo tavern in Bekkersdal, killing nine people and wounding 10 others early Sunday morning.

The attackers, arriving in a white minibus and a silver sedan, opened fire indiscriminately using an AK-47 and pistols. In a chilling turn, witnesses reported that the gunmen searched the bodies of their victims after shooting them, stealing cell phones and other valuables before fleeing.

The massacre spilled into the streets as the perpetrators continued to fire randomly while escaping, striking an innocent e-hailing driver who had just dropped off a client nearby.

This incident marks the second mass shooting to rock the country this month, following a similar attack on December 6 that claimed 12 lives. While the area is notorious for gang activity related to illicit gold mining, authorities say the motive for this specific “unprovoked” attack remains under investigation.
