The Nigeria Labour Congress has raised an alarm over the country’s economic and democratic stability, citing a dangerous mix of heavy taxation, low wages, and a soaring national debt.

NLC President Joe Ajaero delivered the warning on Wednesday in Abuja during the 85th birthday celebration and memoir launch of the union’s founding leader, Hassan Sunmonu.
Ajaero accused the federal government of systematically excluding workers and the impoverished from critical policy decisions, particularly those involving the newly implemented tax regime that took effect on January 1.
The labor leader called for an urgent rethink of fiscal policies, arguing that the current trajectory places an unfair burden on the working class while debt-servicing consumes a vast portion of national revenue.
The Congress is now demanding that the government re-engage with organized labor to craft more inclusive economic strategies that prioritize social justice and the welfare of ordinary citizens.
