The National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) members on Tuesday organised a free medical outreach that benefitted 1500 people of Gidan Kara, Wamakko Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The medical outreach services is piloted under Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) driven by the 2021 theme : “Health is Wealth for Advancement”
Speaking during the exercise, the Director General of NYSC, Brig. Gen Ibrahim Shuaibu noted that National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) medical outreach was in response to the rate of avoidable deaths being recorded frequently among the poor and especially those in the rural areas.
Accordingly, Shu’aibu noted that the corp has since inception in 1973, recorded landmark achievements especially in the key areas of promoting national unity and integration.
” The corp has also impacted in the areas of healthcare delivery services as we are witnessing today, rural infrastructure , mass literacy , education , sports and other social services for the development of nation and benefit of humanity.”
He noted that such contributions and achievements were made possible through the efforts of successive batches of corp members whose patriotic zeal , dedication and selflessness have been source of pride to all Nigerians”.
Shu’aibu, represented by the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr Philip Enatonme Enaberue, regretted that people in rural areas do not have access to basic health care services either for non availability or above their reach.
” This why the NYSC engage the services of corp member Doctors , and other medical related graduates to attend to those in need.
” I will like to at this juncture, acknowledge, appreciate and commend the corp members for their dedication to service.”
While noting their resilience and commitment to serving humanity, Shu’aibu described the corp member doctors as qualified professionals capable of giving the best medical services as he assured of continuity of the outreach exercise.
0n his part the state coordinator thanked the people for their impressive turn out and their cooperation towards the success of the outreach.
However, leader of the medical team , Dr Ishaya Lengdang said the exercise recorded over 500 treated cases” Is the highest, followed by child hood diarrhoea and hypertension. Some patients with most for surgical attention were referred to specialist hospitals for follow up”, he explained.
Accordingly, the District Head of Wamakko , Alhaji Aliyu Barade thanked the NYSC for considering his community for the outreach.
Representing Wamakko local government area, its Vice Chairman, Zubairu Muhammad while expressing appreciation to NYSC for the gesture, pleaded for the exercise to be a routine one with a call on other agencies to emulate NYSC.
