RIVERS NUJ SUSPENDS SIX MEMBERS

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, has suspended six of its members indefinitely.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Secretary of the Union, Ike Wigodo.

The suspended members are Obed Omah, Walson Ibim Asako, Philip. O. Philip and Chima Woke of Radio Rivers Chapel; Amadi Samuel Akujobi of The Tide Chapel and Obiandu Madume of RSTV Chapel.

The NUJ, at a well attended Congress meeting held on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at the Ernest Ikoli Press Centre, Port Harcourt, suspended the affected members for violating Article 7, Section 2(v) of the NUJ Constitution.

The six suspended members had taken the Union to court without exhausting all internal mechanisms for resolving disputes as enjoined by the NUJ Constitution.

Article 7, 2(v) of the NUJ Constitution says “Members who resort to legal action against the Union without exhausting all internal mechanisms for resolving disputes shall automatically be suspended from the Union.”

The suspension which was unanimous followed the motion moved by Mr Ibituru Pepple of Radio Rivers Chapel and seconded by Mr Ogboka Umeda of RSTV Chapel.

The Congress directed the affected members who are holding offices in their chapels to immediately hand over to the next officer in hierarchy.

In the case of Walson Asako and Philip O. Philip who are Chairman and Vice Chairman of Radio Rivers, respectively, they were directed to hand over to the chapel Secretary, Ijeoma Tubosia, while Amadi Akujobi of the Tide Chapel and Obiandu Madume of RSTV were directed to hand over to their Vice Chairmen, Mr John Bibor and Hannah Aman, respectively.

The suspension, according to the statement, takes immediate effect.

Signed
Ike Wigodo
Secretary
