Senator Wamakko pays N4m to free 34 inmates in Sokoto prisons

By Ado Hassan, Sokoto
Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko(APC-Sokoto Central) yesterday paid worth N4 million fines, compensations and debts to secure the release of 34 prison inmates ‎in Sokoto state.

However, those inmates that regained their freedom also included an 18-year old lady were serving their jail terms in Sokoto central, Gwadabawa, Bissalam, Tambuwal and Wurno prisons.

The humanitarian gesture was extended to the freed inmates under the Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko Free Legal Services Foundation.

Accordingly, each of the freed inmates received a donation of N20,000 as transport back to their various towns and villages.

Senator Wamakko and former governor in the state represented by Mr Bashiru Mu’azu, said the gesture was part of efforts to reduce the congestion in the prisons.

” It is also aimed at assisting the freed inmates to celebrate the forthcoming Eid-el-Fitr celebrations with their families.”

In the same vein, the lawmaker cautioned them against indulging in any acts capable of bringing them back to the prison, as well as keep to their financial obligations.

” You should be of good behaviors, be good ambassadors of your families, as well as strive to be good and productive citizens.

In his brief remarks, Secretary of the Foundation, Mr Abdulhamid Zubairu, said that the exercise was carried out to meet the cardinal principles and objectives of assisting the less privileged and indigent litigants who are languishing in prison custody, explaining that” the foundation also represents some inmates in court, who
are in dire need of legal representation, absence of which have kept them in prison custody.”

Also, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association( NBA), in the state, Mr Lema Wali, represented by his Secretary, Mr Kabir Mohammed, commended Wamakko for the gesture while urging other wealthy individuals to emulate the lawmaker and promised to partner with other individuals and organizations in this direction.
