Alhaji Aliyu Sahabi ‘Yar Abba, Chairman Sokoto state Bureau De Change Operators in Sokoto State has appealed to the Federal Government for the urgent need to lift the ban on the importation of vehicles through land borders.
Alhaji ‘Yar Abba who spoke to reporters in Sokoto said the call became necessary as the ban was causing untold hardship to Nigerians, especially the vehicle dealers and their prospective customers.
He observed that the ban has caused prices of vehicles to skyrocket, saying that” most of the dealers are now idle. It has also affected the thousands of direct and indirect jobs they were creating for youths.”
The BDC chair also lamented that the government was fast losing whopping revenues as the nefarious act of smuggling was still thriving .
According to him” the ugly trend can be redressed if the ban is lifted.”
He stressed the for officials of the Nigeria Customs Service to be allowed to collect duties on vehicles imported through the land borders while point out that, doing so would boost the nation’s revenues, curb smuggling and reduce poverty, as well as unemployment.
In the same vein, he commended the Central Bank of Nigeria for its sustainably injecting more dollars into the foreign exchange market.
The chairman also acknowledged that the efforts have greatly helped in stabilizing the foreign exchange market, with the dollar selling for an average of N 360 for about five consecutive months
