Sokoto trains, support 500 women in various trades for self reliance

Fresh set of 500 women trained in different trades under the Sokoto state government skills acquisition programme initiative were on Wednesday graduated and supported with kits and take off capital to conduct their businesses.

The essence is to drive the state government 9-point smart agenda for youth and women empowerment for self reliance and economic prosperity of the state.

The graduands who specialised in the different trades including tailoring, soap making, leather works, hairdressing and food processing were drawn from across the 23 LGs.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony , Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto explained that the focus of his administration was to amplify opportunities for job creation, empowerment for both youths and women inorder to discourage restiveness and idleness among teeming unemployed persons in the state.

He disclosed that each of the trainees would be supported with starter kits relevant to their trades and businesses.

The governor described the empowerment initiative for youths and women as key component and driver of the 9-point smart agenda vision for job creation and boosting local economy.

He reiterated the commitment of his government towards creating enabling environment for economic growth aimed at promoting business opportunities and development of artisanship.

” In line with our focus on that, we have procured and distributed 1,000 motorcycles and 500 tricycles to youths on hire purchase sales at subsidized rates”, he explained while stressing that the introduction of the existing poverty reduction intervention programs to promote self-reliance among women and youth is being sustained.

He disclosed that other support initiatives that would bring succour to vulnerable persons were underway to brace the desire for economic prosperity of the state.

Earlier, Special Advisers to the State Governor on Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reductions Barrister Sa’adatu Yunusa Muhammad commended the state government for the gesture, describing the initiative as a productive and profitable approach to encourage self reliance among teeming youths in the state.

However, thousands of youths were since inception of the administration of governor Aliyu Sokoto trained in various trades under the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Social Welfare and the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
