POLYTECHNIC WORKERS TO BEGIN WARNING STRIKE WEDNESDAY
Polytechnic workers across Nigeria have announced a three-day warning strike, scheduled to run from Wednesday, January 22, to Friday, January 24, 2025.
The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnic (SSANIP) accuses authorities of marginalizing non-teaching staff and denying them career progression.
In a letter dated January 14, 2025, addressed to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, SSANIP’s Secretary, Nura Gaya, stated that the strike is necessary to protest alleged attempts to deprive non-teaching staff of their rightful progression to CONTEDISS 15 in the revised Polytechnic Schemes of Service.
HAJJ 2025 FARES ANNOUNCED
Nigerians planning to embark on the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia will pay between N8.3 million and N8.7 million, depending on their region.
The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) announced that pilgrims from the Southern States will pay N8.7 million, while those from Borno and Adamawa Zones will pay N8.3 million.
NAHCON’s Executive Chairman, Prof. Abdullahi Usman, explained that the fare was determined after extensive collaboration with stakeholders.

NIGERIA TO HOST 2026 COMMONWEALTH FENCING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Nigeria has made history as the first African country to secure hosting rights for the 2026 Commonwealth Senior and Veterans Fencing Championships.
The Commonwealth Fencing Federation conditionally approved Nigeria’s bid, subject to certain conditions.
This milestone comes after Nigeria successfully hosted the Fencing World Cup last year, which saw participation from over 10 countries, including Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

TIKTOK RESTORES SERVICE IN THE U.S.
TikTok restored service in the United States on Sunday after briefly going offline. The blackout followed the enforcement of a new law banning the app on national security grounds.
The president-elect proposed a 50% U.S. ownership stake in a joint venture, suggesting that TikTok’s value could reach “hundreds of billions of dollars.”
TikTok resumed operations by Sunday afternoon but has not addressed the ownership proposal. Meanwhile, ByteDance has resisted any sale, despite a 90-day grace period under the law.
