Today in history: International Mens Day

Today, November 19 the world recognises the masculine figure as it marks the ‘International men’s day’.

This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the contributions of men to society, their health and well-being.

It is also a day that focuses on the challenges men face in their day to day lives and the positive value a man brings to the world.

History

According to report, a history lecturer at the university of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh founded International Men’s Day on November 19 as a mark of respect for his father in 1999 and also to celebrate how on that date in 1989 Trinidad and Tobago’s football team had united the country with their endeavours to qualify for the World Cup.

Since then, It is seen as an occasion to celebrate boys’ and men’s lives, achievements and contributions, in particular for their contributions to nation, union, society, community, family, marriage, and childcare.

Theme for year 2022

The theme for this year’s International Men’s Day is “Helping Men and Boys”.

The theme aims to celebrate the positive contribution of men to this world, families, and communities and promote their well-being.

Celebration and significance

The importance of this day is to help men around the world look at their day to day life and discuss issues as it affects them.

The day can be celebrated by simply sending a message to men around you he could be a brother, father, husband, cousin or friends. Telling them ‘Thank you’ for the efforts they have put in and for always being there.
