In an interview with the New York Times published on Thursday, January 8, 2026, the President stated that protecting religious groups is a key focus of his foreign policy.
The warning comes shortly after a U.S. military strike took place in Nigeria on Christmas Day 2025.
While the U.S. military says the operation was carried out with the Nigerian government’s permission, Nigeria’s leaders have described the strike as a “joint operation” specifically targeting terrorists.
The Nigerian government has repeatedly stated that these security issues have nothing to do with any particular religion and affect all citizens.
During the interview, President Trump acknowledged that Muslims are also being killed in the country but claimed that Christians are facing the most danger. He told reporters that while he hopes the Christmas Day strike was a one-time event, he is ready to authorize more attacks if the killing of Christians continues.
