The move signals that the US is actively considering implementing visa restrictions against individuals and groups implicated in the violence.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the decision in a statement. The new policy is implemented through Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
Under this authority, the State Department can restrict visas for anyone who has:
directed, authorised, significantly supported, participated in, or carried out violations of religious freedom,”
Where deemed appropriate, these restrictions can also be extended to the offenders’ immediate family members.
The announcement followed a briefing by US House Republicans on Tuesday, which specifically highlighted rising religious violence in Nigeria.
