US, EU, ECOWAS, Int’l Observers Support Nig. Election Postponement

The United States, European Union, ECOWAS and other international Election Observers have endorsed the shift of Nigeria’s Presidential and National Assembly elections by Independent National Electoral Commission.

The INEC Chairman, Prof Yakubu Mahmod had around 3:00am on Saturday announced the postponement of first phase of general elections from February 16 to February 23,2019 due to logistics and operational challenges.

The United States Embassy in Nigeria on Saturday night said they fully supports the joint statement by the heads of the ECOWAS and other international election observation missions on the postponement of the February 16 Nigerian elections.

The statement read:’We join in encouraging all Nigerians to ensure a free, fair, peaceful, and credible election by supporting the Independent National Electoral Commission while it finalizes electoral preparations this week and by voting in peace together on February 23.”

Prof Yakubu also met International Observers and other stakeholders including representatives of political parties to keep them abreast with the situation
