He passed away at 7:35 a.m. in his residence at Santa Marta in Vatican City, nearly a month after being discharged from a five-week hospital stay for double pneumonia.

The certificate, signed by Vatican health director Professor Andrea Arcangeli, cited a cerebral stroke, coma, and cardiocirculatory collapse as causes of death. It also revealed the Pope had underlying health conditions including hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, and multiple bronchiectasis—some of which had not been publicly known.
