The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and Turkey

(New York, NY) – Since its inception in Egypt 90 years ago, the Muslim Brotherhood has fought for the establishment of a global caliphate ruled by sharia law. In 2012, senior Brotherhood member Mohammed Morsi was elected president. However, his regime’s drive for dictatorial powers and its crackdown on demonstrators and journalists led to his ouster in 2013.

Deemed a terrorist group by several countries, the Muslim Brotherhood has been welcomed in Turkey. Despite being charged in absentia by Egypt, Turkish President Recep Erdoğan has allowed Brotherhood members to openly organize against the Egyptian government, even providing the group access to satellite television and radio stations.
