On Saturday, January 3, 2026, armed gunmen stormed the local market in Borgu Local Government Area, killing at least 40 people—some reportedly executed with their hands tied—and abducting scores of women and children.
The President has issued a direct mandate to the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, and all security service chiefs to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice and all captives are rescued.
The attackers are believed to be bandits and ISIS-linked Lakurawa fighters fleeing southward from Sokoto and Zamfara states following recent U.S. airstrikes on Christmas Eve.
In a statement released Sunday, Tinubu vowed that the government would “hunt down” not only the killers but also any individuals found to be aiding or abetting them.
